How do Creators Get Paid for Fashion Week?
How do Creators Get Paid for Fashion Week?
You guys have been LOVING all the info I’m dishing out about Fashion Week, so I wanted to let you in on the top three questions I’ve gotten this past week:
👉 Do creators actually get paid to go?
👉 How much money are we talking?
👉 What really goes on behind the scenes?
Ready?
Okay, so the top three ways creators make money during fashion week are:
1. “Regular Contract” = This is quite straightforward. A brand that is doing a runway show (or presentation) pays a creator to attend, wear the clothes, and post.
2. “Third Party Contract” = This is when a brand that’s not having a runway show (think skincare, beauty, jewelry, even car services) pays a creator to use their product/service during fashion week. Sometimes this also means that the brand is affiliate with a clothing brand. For example, let’s say that Marc Jacobs has a runway show. They’re not paying anyone to attend, buttttttttttt MAC Cosmetics may be sponsoring the runway show and they could work with creators. Get it?
3. “Travel Contract” = This is when a brand pays for the creators’s travel and hotel. Although it’s not a paycheck (as brand will arrange travel), it’s a great way for creators to save money.
But Here’s the Reality Check…
This level of opportunity doesn’t come overnight. Good lawd far from it! It takes yearsssssss of work, consistency, and yes plenty of rejection (sorry no invite!) before the invites and big contracts arrive. This is something that always shocks creators when I tell them… especially for more luxurious markets like Paris and Milan. Like no boo, Chanel ain’t gonna fly you, dress you, and sit you front row because one video of yours went viral and now you have 2mm followers. That’s just not the reality of it, that a lot of people don’t like hearing.
When I started negotiating these deals over a decade ago, most shows didn’t even want creators in the room. Now? When creators are invited, they’re treated like the VIPs.
I’ve been lucky to help shape that evolution, and it’s still one of the things I’m proudest of in my career.
And yeah, Idalia INC is accepting creators to manage them during Fashion Week but here’s the thing, if you’re profile isn’t on point, if there’s no brand alignment, if there are no relationships you already have been building then I would honestly just be taking your money, signing you, and FAILING you miserably.
