The Silent Collapse of the Millennial Creator Economy...
The Silent Collapse of the Millennial Creator Economy...
I know this one’s going to sting a little…
But you’re here because I don’t sugarcoat things, right? Good. Now that that’s settled I want to talk about why millennial creators are quietly falling to the wayside in the creator economy and what can be done to salvage it.
As I predicted last year, 2025 became the year where millennial creators experienced a major shift in how social media view them, how brands spend (or not) their marketing dollars on them, and how “the new kids in town” began taking the spotlight.
And yes, it’s an uncomfortable truth but if we do not acknowledge, understand and ultimately pivot, then you too are going to be left in the dust in 2026. And I’m not exaggerating.
First things first is that we need to understand that millennials were the first to monetize attention on social media, first starting with blogs (“the good ol’ days). Millennials grew up in the wild wild west of social media. This was a time before algorithms, before funnels, before automation tools that do half the work now. We learned everything through trial, error, and late nights in Canva and Google Docs.
But somewhere along the way, the game evolved. And while many of us stayed busy trying to “keep up,” an entire generation (GenZ) quietly leapfrogged us. And the crazy thing about it all is that they didn’t even work harder to get ahead.
They grew up in this world and learned how to build faster, leaner, and more scalable businesses while millennials are still caught in the hamster wheel we helped build.
So why are millennial creators struggling?
Let’s break it down to two simple yet powerful reasons why:
#1: You’re still playing by the old rules of the internet.
Millennials were trained to think that visibility equals success. We were told to “build a following,” “grow your audience,” and “trust the process.” And the crazy part is this is the EXACT advise I was telling my talent back in 2015… A DECADE AGO. But it’s not what I teach now. Just the opposite actually.
But if creators don’t have a knowledgeable manager, agent or strategist, they find themselves in these outdated mantras.
That“process” was designed for a completely different era, back when the algorithm rewarded time and effort, not optimization and automation.
Think about it, creators in 2012 built their identities simply by showing up. But our friends, the GenZers, built theirs around systems that show up for them.
#2: You’re trapped in the cycle of reinvention instead of refinement.
This one hits deep, I know. I see it almost every single day when I work with creators. And the sad truth is that no one can reinvent themselves like a millennial creator.
Ten years ago, I would have applauded this. But in 2025 heading to 2026, this is the biggest red flag you can have. Almost every creator that comes to me for strategy comes to me because they want the “answer” to be a rebrand… a new color palette, a bio refresh, a “new era” post. And although those can be minor elements to succeeding as a millennial creator today, it ain’t the whole picture.
Millennials go this way bc they’re searching for momentum…
“Idalia, my engagement is down, help!”
“Idalia, my last two posts didn’t do good. I think I need to rethink my content because no one cares anymore.”
Think about it. When your current strategy feels off, and you think a new visual identity will fix it.
And if you get nothing from this post get this:
Reinvention is not the same as evolution.
What you need to do is the exact opposite. And it’s something I spend a lot of time on in my Private Lab : You need to test, analyze, then double the f*ck down.
For the love of God, stop trying to “stay relevant” and start being strategic if you really want to make this a business.
So no, the creator economy didn’t die for you dear millennial….
The economy just evolved beyond the version you built and are still building.
And while some millennials are burning out trying to “keep up,” (sound familiar?), others are brilliantly realizing they need to step back, rebuild their systems, and approach their creator business like an actual business not a content treadmill.
We’re entering the era of creator architecture, the kind where your strategy, systems, and structure are what scale you.
This is your re-entry moment.
If what you’ve read is ringing a bell for you, good. If you feel like you’re spinning your wheels while everyone else seems to be soaring, no, it’s not your imagination. You just outgrew the version of your creator business that got you here.
But you don’t need to start over. You need a system that works for this version of you.
That’s exactly why I built The Private Lab.
It’s my 12-week private container for creators and entrepreneurs who are done with the chaos and ready to build strategic, scalable, and sustainable businesses.
And the timing couldn’t be better because the next Private Lab kicks off in January.
This is YOUR moment to decide that 2026 will not look like 2025.
Because if you keep doing what you’ve been doing, you’ll keep getting what you’ve been getting.
Let’s be brutally honest for a second.
You already know what’s not working. You’ve felt it…. the fatigue…. the lack of growth…. the sense that you’re doing everything right and somehow still standing still.
That’s why I want to invite you to book a free exploratory call.
Pressure-free. Let’s have a strategic conversation about where you are, what’s holding you back, and how to rebuild your creator business into something that actually works. Let’s see if my Private Lab is for you.
I don’t want your 2026 to be another endless loop of “trying harder.”
