The Millennial Creator Economy is Collapsing...

The Millennial Creator Economy is Collapsing...

Okay okay okay I know this is gonna cause a bit of a stir, but you’re here because I don’t sugarcoat things, right?

Okay good. So let’s talk about something no one wants to admit: Millennial creators are falling apart. And it’s not because they aren’t talented, but simply because the game has changed… and unfortunately some of them haven’t.

And I want to pause here to take a look at Gen-Z.

What did Gen-Z do? Well, they saw the blueprint, skipped the mistakes (hi, because we made them), and built smarter, faster, and more scalable creator businesses (again, I’m talking personal branding, NOT an product-business). Yeah bruh.

So if you’re a millennial still trying to make the old playbook work, DING DING DING this is your wake-up call.

Here’s why your creator business feels stuck & how Gen-Z is quietly leaving you behind:

1. You were first but Gen-Z were born for it.

It’s safe to say that millennials built the creator economy. I mean we were the literal guinea pigs to this grand social media experiment. We figured out how to monetize blogs (remember those gems?), YouTube, Instagram, and personal brands from scratch.
But Gen-Z? They were born with ring lights in their cribs.

Meaning they grew up in the algorithm. They know how to speak TikTok fluently. How to turn a 7-second meme into a 7-figure funnel.

Scary Stat: Over 50% of Gen Z spends 4+ hours/day on TikTok vs. just 35% of millennials (Pew, 2024). That’s not healthy, but it does provide a glimpse into their triumph over the platform.

2. You’re still monetizing like it’s 2018.

Okay, so here’s the drill. Most millennial creators still depend on brand partnership jobs and affiliate links. Meanwhile, Gen Z monetizes attention. I will say it ‘til the cows come home… the creator economy is no different than any other. If you’re not diviersifying your revenue streams, you WILL be left behind (if you haven’t felt it already).

Scary Stat: Only 13% of Gen-Z creators say sponsorships are their main income stream vs. 41% of millennials (Linktree, 2024).

3. While you’re rebranding, Gen-Z keeps scaling.

You know what I’m talking about. Every couple of months you think you need a new title in your IG bio… or new color scheme… or even a whole new brand persona. You’re in this endless loop of filming, editing, selling and stressing. All the while Gen-Z are building eco-systems. They were born to think like media companies not solo hustlers. Yeah, that hustler culture we grew up on? Gen-Z ain’t having none of that.
But you’re still the one filming, editing, selling, and stressing.

So the harsh truth is that the creator economy didn’t die my fam, you simply outgrew it. And I wanna be clear when I say you didn’t fail. You just got stuck in a version of the creator world that doesn’t work anymore.
And while you’ve been burning out trying to “build your career” Gen Z built systems.

But it’s not too late.
